Lowball: The Ante and Its Effect on Your Strategy

The ante determines a great deal as to how you should play. If the minimum buy-in is $1000 in Deuce-to-Seven No-Limit, any ante less than 3% per hand is considered a low-ante game. That 3% includes the antes from each player and the Blind's bet. So if the sum of the antes plus the Blind is less than $30 in a $1000 buy-in game, you're dealing with a low ante

For example, a $2 ante with a $10 Blind, eight-handed, would equal 2.6% of the $1000 buy-in. That's a low-ante game. If the antes plus the Blind are in the 3% to 6% range, you're dealing with a medium-ante situation.

In low-ante games, the strategy is simpleplay tight. The tighter you play, the more successful you'll be because you can afford to wait for quality hands.

The quality hands are smooth (small) Nines, any Eights or any Sevens. You should try to make these hands (draw at them) at a minimum risk, jeopardizing as few chips as possible. Let your opponents play the Tens and rough Nines - these are the hands you love them to play against you in the big pots.

The occasion will arise when you’ll have to play those hands, too (Tens and rough Nines), but when you do play them, act defensively and try to win small pots (by not getting a lot of your money involved). Your big-pot combat should be reserved for the times when you have high-quality hands.

In low ante games, more money is lost with rough Pat Nines than with any other hand.

For that reason, rough Nines should be played with extra caution. Remember...
Low-Ante games are structured for Sevens and Eights.

When dealing with medium-ante games, you can't be quite so selective about which hands you play and in high-ante games, you've got to come out swinging with some pretty rough hands. Still, the following concept prevails no matter what the ante structure.

Attempt to win small pots with your rough hands, and try to play the big pots with your quality hands.

In low-ante games, your main strategy is to wait for the really high-class hands. In high-ante, the strategy changes. The ante and pot odds justify playing weaker hands and much more judgment is required.
